Exponents are basically repeated multiplication. In other countries, they are called indices. Let's take 2^12 for an example. You have to multiply 2 by itself 12 times. 2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2=4,096. The number on the bottom is the base. The base is the number that is getting multiplied multiple times. In 2^12, the base is 2. The smaller number at the top is the exponent, index, or power. It tells you how many times you have to multiply the base by itself. In 2^12, the exponent is 12. 2^12 is read like this: two to the power of twelve or two to the twelfth (power). Often people say that a number is raised to a power, but that's just saying he same thing in different words. When typing an exponent on a computer or calculator, you need a symbol between the base and the exponent. The symbol is called the caret. It is an upside-down V. The commutative property doesn't apply to exponents. That means, you can't switch the order of the numbers without getting a different answer to a math problem. For example 2^12 is 4096, but if you switch the 2 and 12 to make 12^2, the answer will be 144 not 4096 (you will get a different answer). Sometimes exponents can be confusing: 81^(1/2). That equals 9 so you have to do the square root of 81 instead of multiplying. Then again, you can't multiply a number by itself 1/2 of a time.

There are 2 very common exponents: 2 and 3. When you have 2 as an exponent (#^2), you would say that number (#) squared. When you have 3 as an exponent (#^3), you would say that number (#) cubed. 12^2 is twelve squared. 4^3 is four cubed. We use this in finding area and volume. Examples of exponents:

I found out that another word for exponents are indices and the base is the part that is being multiplied and the power is how many times you need to repeat it. It is easier than than just being like for example 5*5*5*5=625 and just be 5^4.

This videos tell a exponent is a number on top of a whole number. For exmaple ,5^3 is 5*5*5=125 but a common erorr is that people do 5*4 and get 20
